Sabine von Preyss-Friedman was appointed as Avalon’s Chief Medical Officer in 2011. She brings decades of innovation and national accolades combined with quality driven leadership and a passion for seniors. This passion most recently landed her the title of the American Medical Director’s Association’s Medical Director of the Year in 2011 after being named a finalist for the same award for three consecutive years. 

In addition to working as Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director for several long-term care facilities, Dr. von Preyss-Friedman acts as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington within the specialized area of Geriatric Medicine and Long-Term Care. She has shared her knowledge and clinical expertise in presentations around the globe and is published in medical journals.

The native of Germany’s many clinical accomplishments include: establishing systems and processes to reduce and track falls, maximizing effective pain management, reducing antipsychotic medication use, and improving wound care and infection control. She has introduced an array of continuous quality improvement programs to educate staff and track and identify care trends. A graduate of the Technische Universitaet Muenchen in Germany, Dr. von Preyss-Friedman completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Akron General Medical Center in Akron, OH. She then pursued a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Washington. Her work has been internationally recognized with the award of research grants for studies done in Washington and Germany.

Dr. von Preyss-Friedman is also a chair and member of several medical organizations, boards and committees, each of which is focused on improving quality care in Geriatrics.

UGEC Age-Friendly LTSS ECHO - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in Geriatrics
Valerie Flattes, PhD, APRN, MS, ANP-BC, has been a faculty member at the University Of Utah College Of Nursing since 2001. Her background in nursing includes medical surgical nursing, obstetrics, long term care, emergency nursing, and home health care. Since 2003, she has practiced as an adult nurse practitioner.  She completed her PhD at University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. Valerie has a strong commitment to community engagement and has served as a member or officer in several community organizations over the last 21 years.
In July of 2021, Dr. Flattes was been appointed the inaugural associate dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) at the University of Utah College of Nursing (CON). In her new role, Flattes will lead initiatives to integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion into college culture, including academic programs; research and scholarship; clinical practice; recruitment and retention of students, staff and faculty; hiring and promotion practices; and community engagement.

UGEC Fireside Chat - Reducing Isolation and Promoting Wellness for Persons with Dementia and Their Caregivers
LuAnn Lundquist, TRT, and the Founder and Executive Director Memory Matters Utah/Neveda, serves caregivers and those with dementia in our community.  LuAnn has worked in the field since 2002, serving as a Recreation Department Head in a skilled nursing facility and as a Regional Manager and Statewide Education Coordinator for the Utah Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association before founding the nonprofit. She has also completed training in Maintain your Brain, Foundations of Dementia Care Trainer, Dementia Dialogues Trainer. LuAnn is also a former caregiver for family member.

UGEC Age-Friendly LTSS ECHO - Assessment and Care of Persons with Dementia
Michelle Sorweid, DO, MPH is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Geriatrics. She attended medical school at the University of North Texas- Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Sorweid completed Internal Medicine residency in 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver, Colorado and pursued her Geriatrics training at the University of Utah. In July of 2016, she became full-time faculty in the Division of Geriatrics in the School of Medicine at the University of Utah Health Science Center. Dr. Sorweid  also spends time both at the Department of Neurology Cognitive Disorders (CACIR)clinic and Madsen Geriatrics Clinics evaluating patients with cognitive disorders.
